Jing Screencast from the VLC

Hello, Here is the screencast I created using Jing. Like the podcast, it is a simulation of how a screencast might be used to promote resources available in the Verde Valley Campus Learning Center. I've inserted a link and embedded the file to practice both techniques.

Have fun watching!

Welcome Week Podcast

Hi, Here I am at my dining room table creating the podcast you probably just heard. I used the text from the Fall 2009 Welcome Week Workshop flyer created for the Verde Valley Campus. I can see (or rather hear) that my interpretive reading skills need some brushing up, but over all, found the recording software quite easy to use once it was installed on my computer.

Hope you find this a fascinating subject!

Photosharing for Learning

The photo-sharing ideas I pondered for this week's assignment fall into two categories to cover both aspects of my work; the YC Verde Valley Campus Learning Center and teaching music.
(Photo from Yahoo Images)

In the Verde Learning Center:
· Create, find or share from instructors’ image sites for art history classes, biology classes or sociology classes.
· Do the same for writing classes that may use paintings, photos or other images as writing prompts.
· Do the same for historical sites for world or any history classes.
· Create albums to document events that take place in the LC or with staff and tutors, ALWAYS getting their permission before posting.

In the Music Classroom - have teacher, students or both:
· Create photo albums of cities, architecture and sites from the birthplaces of famous composers and musicians.
· Find photos of music halls and other venues of significance.
· Collect still shots of operatic scenes showing set design, costumes, staging and singers.
· Create albums of families of instruments.
· Create albums of photos showing orchestras that perform music from different eras. (Baroque chamber orchestras are very different in size and instrumentation than those of the Romantic period, for instance.)
· Build image collections of instrument consorts from ancient through medieval times.
· Create albums of art works from all historic periods that parallel and demonstrate the stylistic evolution in all the arts from era to era.

Give at least two examples of how the activities might be presented in class.

In the college LC, the ideas presented would require first promotion, and then buy-in by the first adopters in administration and faculty, then LC staff and tutors. Once those avenues have been trod, it would be a matter of promoting the resources with the students by classroom visits, web announcements and LC announcements.

In music teaching, I would initially need to create the basic site and pages. Next would come promoting the albums with my private students and choir members. When a teacher has the opportunity to work individually or in very small groups with her students, it becomes much easier to instill enthusiasm for new ideas and resources - you can speak and teach directly to the needs and motivations of each person. I predict that once the students realize how interesting and fun it is to see the evolution of music in a photo album, then go to the wiki and hear the evolution of music, it will not take long before they will be collaborating on the collections in both sites.
